September 2021

Welcome to the official launch of the Student Opportunities Newsletter! At the end of every month, we will issue a newsletter to all committee members with any updates from the team, upcoming dates to be aware of, and other important news for you to be aware of - so make sure you keep an eye on your inboxes!

We’re officially into the start of term, and it has been amazing to see everything you’ve got up to so far! Freshers’ Fair was incredibly successful with over 3500 students coming to see what student groups Royal Holloway has to offer. All of your taster sessions have engaged hundreds of students and the variety of events and activities you have planned have given 'freshers' a great start to their university experience.

Keep up the good work, we’re all looking forward to working with you over the course of the year!

Natasha's Law

Having food at your events? Don’t forget the new legislation Natasha’s Law that you must follow. The general gist is that you need to have ingredients displayed for all food you have at your event.

Dates for the Diary

Nominations for the by-election run until 7 October, with voting open from 11-13 October. Don’t forget to get promoting!

The first Committee Café of the year is being held on Tuesday 9 November - make sure to note down the date as it will be a great opportunity to meet fellow committee members and share ideas.

Student Group Bulletin Board

This is a space for you to get messages out to other committee members. Whether that be an event you want to collaborate with other groups on, a call for support, or details of services your group can offer, send us your bulletins and we’ll include them in our newsletter. The deadline to submit for the next newsletter is Wednesday 20 October.

What else is happening?

  • As well as the student group by-election, we are also running an election for our Executives, Collectives, and Department Reps, as well as looking for volunteers to sign up to be a Course Rep. The Societies, Sports and Opportunities (SSO) Executive is a great platform to get involved in the decision-making behind student groups, ratifying new ones, supporting the VP Societies & Sport's manifesto projects and sitting on the panel for Society & Colours Awards as well as the grant funding panel. Interested? Great, make sure to nominate yourself using the link below!

  • The Student Voice team has also re-launched the Bright Ideas platform where you can submit any idea that you think would improve life at Royal Holloway. All you need to do is head to the Bright Ideas page, submit your idea, wait for the votes to come in and the Voice team will take it from there. From microwaves in Tommy’s Lounge, to STI testing on campus, every idea you send in matters!
